Trail Descriptions

The HEMLOCK LOOP, marked with yellow, begins beside the sanctuary sign up a small step between the stone wall bordering Tripp Street. The sanctuary land is quite narrow at this point with only 60 feet of road frontage but widens as you follow the trail up the hill. The trail makes a loop through the mixed stands of hemlock, oak and beech on the hilltop winding among rock formations. Midway around the loop is a log bench. This is a good place to sit and look over the rugged terrain of the sanctuary below. During spring migration, this overlook allows eye level observation of warblers and other canopy feeding birds.

The VALLEY TRAIL, marked with white, connects to the Hemlock Loop at the northeastern corner down a series of log steps constructed by Chappaqua Boy Scout Troop #57 in 1975. The trail bears south along the foot of the rock cliff through mature oak and beech: woodland. A small stream fed by spring seeps from the hillside runs beside and, at one point, across the trail. At this crossing the trail divides into a loop around one of the many rock escarpments in Haas Sanctuary. On the northern side of this loop the trail becomes quite steep and rocky. This part of the trail and the adjacent BOULDER SPUR can be icy in winter when the hillside spring seeps freeze into miniature waterfalls. The spur trail, which requires hand and foot climbing, will take you closer to the enormous boulders which intertwine with the stone wall on the sanctuary's northern boundary.

Spring 2008 Update: We anticipate releasing an updated sanctuary trail map in the coming months to reflect seven additional acres of land along Sheather Road that were added to this sanctuary in late 2007 through a donation from the Betts Family, formerly of Chappaqua.
