Sanctuary [Trail
Descriptions] [Sanctuary
Description] [Travel
Directions]
The Bluebird Trail, marked with blue, begins at the sanctuary entrance on Sheather Road, winds through the meadow area and then climbs uphill to follow the forest edge before returning to the sanctuary entrance. The Hillside Trail marked with yellow, links the Bluebird and Valley Trails following a stone wall that was once the eastern boundary line of the original sanctuary. The Valley Trail, marked with white, offers another loop through the interior of the sanctuary with views of the cliff edge and giant glacial boulders found here. Along this trail are also vernal pools, temporary wetlands, where frogs and salamanders breed in the spring. The Cliff Trail marked with red, offers connection to Tripp Street and skits the northern side of the rock cliff. This was the original entrance to the first parcel of Haas Sanctuary. Summer 2009 Update: This updated sanctuary trail map reflects seven additional acres of land along Sheather Road added to the sanctuary in late 2007 through a donation from the Betts Family, formerly of Chappaqua. An entrance sign on Sheather Road and interpretive trail signs are planned to be added to the sanctuary in Fall 2009. A possible parking area for 2-3 cars off of Sheather Road is also currently being reviewed. Additional work has been underway to add trails linking the old and new sanctuary sections and enhance the meadow habitat along Sheather Road with native plantings and bluebird boxes. These additions for habitat quality and environmental education have been made possible through a grant from the New York City Environmental Fund administered by the Hudson River Foundation and through the work of our volunteers and board members.
