For school groups, we can tailor your field trip to your learning goals. For scout groups, we can customize your field trip for specific award requirements.

Please note the recommended trip lengths, class sizes, and chaperone numbers for children and youth field trips.

Trip Leaders & Chaperones
Our guided field trips for school groups are typically led by our staff Enviromental Educator. Our guided field trips for community groups are typically led by either Anne Swaim, our Executive Director, or our Environmental Educator.

For Pre-K (age 3 and up) to 2nd grade classes,we ask you to bring one chaperone/teacher per five students. For 3rd to 8th grade classes, we request one chaperone/teacher per eight students. For 9th grade through 12th grade, we suggest one chaperone/teacher per ten students.

Scheduling
For your first choice of dates, please contact our office as soon as possible. Guided field trips can be scheduled Monday through Saturday. In general, morning field trips offer more possibilities for wildlife observation but we also schedule after-school and early evening guided field trips. We do not charge a fee to reserve a date. Once you have reserved a date, we will send you a confirmation invoice acknowledging your reservation. Depending on availability, we also offer pre-scheduling of a rain/snow date.

Cost

  • $110/class for school field trips
  • $5/person suggested donation
    for community group field trips

Children and youth field trips for not-for-profit organizations are priced at the community group field trip rate. Underwritten by the support of our members, our fees do not reflect the full cost of our guided field trips. Our guided field trips can also be offered on a sliding scale fee to a limited number of schools and groups in proportion to your available budget. Payment is due on the date of the field trip with the exception of BOCES-funded school field trips.

Trip Sizes
For all of our customized, guided field trips, we request a maximum of 25 participants – excluding teachers, chaperones, and group leaders – to allow for a higher quality, interactive experience and to minimize impact on wildlife and habitats.

Program Lengths
We suggest a 45-60 minute length for school guided field trips. We can schedule two guided field trips back-to-back at the same location to faciliate bus transfers. We do limit scheduling of school groups to two guided field trips per day. For college-age and adult trips, we recommended at 90-120 minute trip length.

Weather
If road conditions are dangerous or if there is significant threat of heavy rain, rain with low temperatures, high winds, or a threat of lightning, we will contact you to reschedule your field trip. Depending on availability, we also offer pre-scheduling of a rain/snow date.
