Our kickoff program this fall will be at the Croton Free Library and focus on white-tailed deer. Ernest (EJ) Borchert is the Deer and Land Management Biologist from Region 3, our region, for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. EJ will update us about the status of white-tailed deer management in our region and other deer issues.

Ernest “E.J.” Borchert grew up in the Hudson Valley and earned a B.S. in Conservation Biology from SUNY-ESF and a M.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia where he studied white-tailed deer dietary ecology at the University’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. EJ has been with NYDEC since 2018, when he began as a seasonal Fish & Wildlife Technician in Region 9. In 2022, he accepted a permanent position as a Wildlife Biologist in Region 2 as the Reptile and Amphibian Biologist. In the fall of 2023, EJ transferred to Region 3 as Deer and Land Management Biologist

Published in March 2024 by Purple Mountain Press, The Hudson River Schools of Art and Their Ice Age Origins by Hudson Valley geologists Robert and Johanna Titus links 19th-century Hudson Valley culture to prehistoric glacial activity, showing how ice-sculpted terrain inspired America’s first major art movement, landscape architecture, and literature.

This is a good year to consider the influence of the Hudson River on American art especially with 2026 marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederic Church, America’s greatest landscape artist.

Co-sponsored by and held at the Chappaqua Public Library.

Robert and Johanna Titus are, respectively, retired professors of Geology and Biology. They are best known in the Catskills as popular science writers. Over the years they have written for several regional magazines, including Kaatskill Life and Tri-County Historical Reviews. They currently write for local newspaper : the Mountain Eagle  They are the authors of five books on Catskills and Hudson Valley geology. The Titus’s are frequently invited to present PowerPoint lectures on their research and have been seen on television and heard on radio. They have a facebook page (“The Catskill Geologist”), a blog site (“thecatskillgeologist.com”) and can be contacted at randjtitus@prodigy.net.

During the 19th century there was something of a cultural Renaissance right here in the Hudson Valley region. America’s first worldclass literature appeared. We also saw the birth of American landscape architecture. Most importantly, led by Thomas Cole, we saw the appearance of the Hudson River School of Art. In short, our region became the center of a truly important cultural movement. None of this, we argue, would ever have happened if the Hudson Valley and Catskills had not been so heavily glaciated. We take our readers to see how the glaciers created the landscapes that so inspired the great artists of those times.  Knowing the ice age history that inspired all the arts of the Hudson Valley will help you appreciate them so much more.
