Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

As of February 2021, 32 different geocaches are active in Saw Mill River Audubon sanctuaries. [ SMRA geocaches list ]

Once a geocache is found, the finder signs a log book in the cache to record their find, can log their find online at geocaching.com and may also trade with simple items stored in the cache container. Then the cache is placed back in its original hiding place.

Please contact our office before hiding any new geocaches caches in our sanctuaries.

We support geocaching but, before giving the required landowner permission for you to put a new geocache in our sanctuaries, we want to work with you to make sure that we have high quality geocaches in our sanctuaries and that sensitive sanctuary habitats are protected.
